It’s the marketers broken record.  On and on it goes.  Why no one follows nobody knows.

Everything looks so good doesn’t it?  Our senses are awakened by the smells, our eyes dazzled by the colors and display, our minds excited we found that buffet coupon in Sunday’s Super Coupon Clipper we just subscribed to.  “Waste not, want not” as the saying goes; better pile up!  However the fact is the amount of food one can actually ingest in one sitting compared to the engineering skill of piling food pyramids onto a single plate, plus dessert plate and second entree plate differ greatly.

Same goes with the mind.  Overwhelm and overload set in rapidly when new marketers attempt to learn every internet marketing strategy at the get go.  Understanding the fact that we can only process one bit of information at a time will help ease feelings of overwhelm.  Imagine a flashlight flashing on and off, on and off.  That’s how the brain processes information – not on and off at the same time but at two separate intervals.

But where in the world do you start when the plates aren’t lined up on one side?

When tackling unfamiliar marketing strategies first assess the foundation of the strategy to see if it’s a good fit for your natural interests and abilities.  Is it based on writing?  Is it based on video?  Is it based on systematic distribution and management content?  Is it based on the ability to reach out to others and make genuine connections?

It’s up to the new marketer to figure out where their natural skill sets lean toward.  That’s the best place to start.  Start in an area that excites you and puts you in a state of flow where the time just flies by.

I remember like it was yesterday. I was fresh out of college, touring and playing music in a band, and working my tail off as a bartender living paycheck to paycheck. It was an amazing time in my life, but my bank account was in the negative.

It was about noon-ish on a weekday when I awoke. The birds were chirping, the sun was out, and there was something special in the air that morning… I could taste it, I could feel it, and for some strange reason I felt that this particular day was going to be a big day. I turned out to be right.

I casually walked from my bed and over to the outdated computer I had all through college (I didn’t have an office in those days… I had a 200 foot space to call my “office / bedroom / bathroom”)

I went to Google and typed in 3 simple words:

“Make more money.”

A little ad popped up on the right side of Google that caught my attention. The ad that changed my life read:

And the rest is history. I knew nothing about marketing, I didn’t know what MLM was, I never heard of networking, and I had learned nothing about human psychology and sales prior to seeing this ad. That was nearly 7 years ago.

And it was the “BROKE” part of this ad that caught my attention. That was the real PAIN for me. That was the trigger I needed to click on that ad. (side copywriting / marketing note: we humans will do roughly 10x more to avoid PAIN than we will to gain pleasure. This ad hit both the pleasure of making more money, and the pain of being broke…. jackpot!)

So how does this relate to you?

99% OF PEOPLE STAY BROKE… But do YOU have to stay broke?

Maybe. Maybe not.

And I say “maybe” because I don’t know you personally (unless of course you’re a member of MLSP or are in my inner-circle), and I’m not sure what your current psychological makeup is.

The point of this post is to WAKE YOU UP. Here’s the deal… Roughly 95% of the people in this industry make less than $5.00 per week (true statement).

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Never before in the history of mankind have we had access to so much powerful information, tools, knowledge, and resources at the tips of our fingers, and it doesn’t cost you a dime. If you want to find a solution to a problem or an answer to a question, you can simply go to Google and instantaneously retrieve information on virtually any topic one can think of.

And when it comes to building your network marketing empire, building your business in 2011 SHOULD be a LOT easier versus if you were building a business in the 1970′s when email, Google, and Facebook weren’t even born yet.

And there is NO shortage of leaders in our industry who constantly give all of their best converting tips and tricks away for FREE that you can tap into immediately. So with all of this access, why is it that 95% are broke? Why are YOU broke?

We all have access to the same information. We all have access to the same tools. We all at the drop of a dime can find the answer to any question one can think of.

SO WHY ARE YOU BROKE?!

You ready for the answer? It’s simple…

Your “WHY” isn’t big enough and it doesn’t compel you. Period.

That is the ONLY reason you’re broke. It’s the only reason that makes any sense. Listen, we all know how to lose weight: eat less and throw on some running shoes.

We also all know how to build a network marketing business. Get leads, get reps, and get paid! It’s not rocket science.

Of course there will be obstacles along the way… anything worth achieving will never come “easy.” But you know what you’ve got to do. You know what things need to get done in order for you to get the results… YOU’RE JUST NOT DOING THE THING!

And the deep reason why is because your compelling reasons SUCK! (I’m deliberately yelling at you to WAKE YOU UP, GET YOU OUT OF YOUR FUNK, AND ON TRACK!)

So many people tell me they want to “make more money.” And I’ll tell them cool, here’s a few bucks, and good luck.

I’m not interested in “I want to make more money.” I’m interested WHY you want to make more money, because that is what’s going to determine whether or not you FOLLOW THROUGH, TAKE ACTION, AND GET RESULTS.

WHY are you going through the struggle of learning the new skills required to become an entrepreneur?

WHY are you on countless training calls taking priceless time away from your family?

WHY did you choose to go down the road less traveled?

Was it because deep down you wanted more so that you could give back to your community or church? Was it because you wanted a better life for your kids and you wanted to give them the things you didn’t have growing up? Was it because your family has never seen the beautiful islands of the world and you know they deserve that experience and that YOU deserve that type of lifestyle?

IF you haven’t broken through in this industry YET, it comes down to your WHY and what truly motivates and drives you. What you focus on. What your psychological makeup is.

You better have a deep-seated WHY that you would die for, one that moves you… this is REQUIRED if you want to break through all of the obstacles when they come up… and yes, I guarantee they will come up.

And when they do, 95% of our industry clams up, crawls back into their comfort zone, and allows fear to control their lives once again… They were destined for failure before they even got started because they never figured out their WHY in the first place.

A “WHY” that they would give their life for.

For those who have their WHY in place, then I hope this post resonates with you. You understand that there is no turning back because you know what you are fighting for.

You’ve burned every bridge. There is no turning back. Come hell or high water, you’re reaching the promised land because your WHY is so deep in your soul that you will NEVER quit until it’s fulfilled.

And that my friends, is when a fearless leader is born.

That is when you become so magnetically attractive that your contagious energy constantly pulls hordes of people from all directions because others can feel the path you’re on and the energy you’re emitting from a mile away, and they want to be a part of it… they NEED to be a part of it.

Figure out your WHY, and I promise this game becomes easy and all else melts away. Find your passion, keep laser focused on the prize, and all of your actions will by default lead you closer and closer to your dreams and goals.

You are a warrior. Never quit. Success is EARNED, never GIVEN. Find your WHY, and I’ll see you at the promised land.

Fundamental things we need to focus on when building our business. As marketers we get distracted and overwhelmed by all the different marketing tactics, strategies, gimmicks, tools, plug-ins. We start to lose our focus on what’s really important. I like to train on getting back to fundamentals because I understand how important fundamentals are. They’re much more important than any of the other tactics or tools that you can put on top of the fundamentals.

I’m going to share a clever analogy I heard recently from Dan Kennedy about Superman and Batman:

Batman is unique in that he’s a regular man. He doesn’t have any superpowers. He dresses up in a costume, he has his tools, his bat-cave, his bat-mobile and other gadgets. But he bleeds, he can get hurt, he ages, he dies; he’s a regular guy with awesome tools.
Superman, on the other hand, is very different with his intrinsic super powers – he doesn’t age, he has super strength, he has super speed. He doesn’t need any tools. He’s Superman.
What would you rather be? Who would you rather be?

You need to learn the fundamentals. If you’re not making money in your business it’s because you’re missing some of the fundamental skills. It’s not because you don’t understand wordpress, it’s not because you don’t know how to market on facebook, it’s not because you don’t have all the latest plug-ins or that your blog doesn’t look top notch. If you’re not making money in your business it’s because you’re missing some of the fundamental skills. That’s what you need to think about and where you need to focus all your energy right now. Then when you have your foundations in place you can start adding all the tools to multiply your results.

I hope this makes sense because this is going to be a breakthrough for you right now if you apply and run with it.

When I was asking myself what the fundamental principles people need to learn were, I looked at my business experiences and saw it was in the breakthroughs. The breakthroughs had nothing to do with wordpress, with plug-ings and they had nothing to do with learning strategies.

The real breakthroughs are what I’m going to share with you. The majority of your time, energy, and money are needed to master these skills.

Fundamental Principles

1. Your Value
a) Discover what your unique skills, talents, and experiences are. You need to own your own unique value. Many don’t know what their unique value is. Many don’t know what their unique message is, what their perspective is, what their unique skills, talents, and experiences are that they can use to leverage. This is useful to not only position yourself in the market place as a unique individual to separate yourself from the competition but also to use those skills, talents and experience to get better results. Unfortunately a lot of entrepreneurs are doing things in their business that they’re not very strong at. That’s fine – we should improve on our weaknesses but where are you going to get quicker and better results? From working on your weaknesses or working with your strengths? If I’m starting a business I’m going to work on my strengths to get much better, quicker results. I’ll get someone else to do the things I’m weak at. It’s great to work on your weaknesses but you need to focus on your strengths if you want results. Are you clear on what your unique skills, talents and experiences are? Right now are you using those in your business?

When i was trying to build my network marketing business earlier in life I was trying to be somebody I was not – I was trying to model and duplicate my upline. My upline was a typical A-type driver personality who was awesome at meeting strangers and getting phone numbers from strangers. He could walk into an elevator with 5 people and walk out with 3 phone numbers. This was something that was a weakness of mine, it wasn’t natural for me and it took me 5 years to work on and develop that skill. I tapped into my strengths and my talents and my skills when I got involved in learning marketing and online marketing, I realized this was a talent of mine and within 3 months I had my first 5 figure month. Do you see the difference? Big difference. If you want results and are unclear on your strengths you need to take some personality profiles. Just go online and search to find many personality profile tests.

b) Value you bring to marketplace in your particular niche. You need to be an expert. When we talk about positioning yourself as an expert in the network marketing niche, when we’re talking about attraction marketing that doesn’t mean you fake it ’til you make it – that doesn’t mean you position yourself as a fake expert. It means you need to become an expert. Whatever niche or industry you’re going to work in you need to become an expert in that industry you need to learn everything you can about that business, about that industry, that market, that niche. No excuses.
There’s no halfway about this, you can’t fake this. You need to devote yourself to becoming a professional. Are you serious about building a network marketing business? Are you serious about building an online business? Or is it something that you’re just kinda trying out to see if it kinda works? It won’t work if you’re not an expert if you don’t devote yourself 110%.
If you wanted to become a doctor or dentist would you just kinda dip your toe in to see if it works? No, you’d commit yourself to becoming an expert, you’d have certain grades and certain achievements to master before you can become a doctor. You have to look at this business or any other business in the same way. You have to become an expert so you can bring value to the marketplace so you can get paid.
If you’re brand new to the industry and feel like you’re not an expert you’re right, you’re not an expert. That’s fine because you can change that in a matter of weeks. Just hop on some of our webinars, dedicate yourself, commit yourself to training and learning and mastering what we’re teaching. All you need to do is know more than your prospect and you’re an expert. Don’t feel like you need to be a seven figure earner. You just need to know what you’re talking about.

2. Learning Direct Response Marketing Fundamentals
When I discovered direct response marketing I started learning from Dan Kennedy. Dan Kennedy has recently put out a new free video training series. I highly recommend learning from Dan Kennedy.
Think about this when you’re on the phone with a prospect, when you”re making a video, writing an article, when you’re creating a sales page, when you’re creating content, putting a blog together…you need to learn these rules:

a) There’s always going to be an offer for all of your marketing.

b) There’s always a strong reason to respond. It’s got to be a specific strong reason that hits some sort of pain that you’re prospect is feeling. It pulls your prospect away from pain towards pleasure. Think of your prospect as a lazy, overweight potato chip eating, beer drinking, sloth sitting on the couch watching your commercial on TV and the phone is way across the room and somehow you’ve got to get this lazy sloth off the couch walk across the room and pick up the phone to call to buy your product. There must be a strong reason to respond. That’s how you have to think about your sales and marketing. It’s got to have a strong reason to respond.

c) Clear Instructions / Directions.
We did a recent split test on a capture page where we changed two words. Instead of “opt-in below” we said “put your name and email address below”. We increased conversions by 35%. Why? It’s much clearer and easier to understand when we said “put your name and email address”, then when we said “opt-in” because we realized not everyone knows what that means. Make your instructions specific and clear.

d) Always be measuring and tracking so you know what’s working and what’s not. That’s a fundamental principle of marketing.

e) Branding as a By-Product.
Never do any marketing focused solely on branding. Leave that for the big corporations with the deep pockets. That’s what we see all the time with the magazine ads, the billboards, the big banners online. When we look at McDonald’s, BMW, Coca-Cola – that’s what we think of as good marketing. Then we see these small business owners, and entrepeneurs spending tens of thousands of dollars on branding style marketing when they don’t have the deep pockets to make that type of marketing work. You need to understand direct response fundamentals because you can’t waste your money on branding. Branding is a by-product of direct response marketing.

f) There will always be follow Up. This is self explanatory. Follow up.

g) Results Rule
The only thing that matters is results and if you’re tracking and measuring you know what works and what doesn’t. If somebody comes up to us and says, “Hey we’ve got this great idea, you guys should try this”, our first question always is: What are your results?
Ideas are great, we get them all the time – the majority of them are crap. The only thing that matters is results. Have you tested it? Don’t go with some crazy idea you have and spend the next 3 months putting up some sales funnel because you think this idea is going to work. Put up something really quick – get a test out to see if it’s even going to work because the only thing that matters is results.

Ok we’ve covered Value and Direct Response.
Having those two things in place will allow you to have a breakthrough in your business. Stop for minute and ask yourself if you’ve mastered these two things first. Have I got this down? If not these are the things you need to work on. Master them.

The third fundamental principle you must have in your business is:

3. Communication and Sales Skills
You need to have strong communication, sales, presentation skills and the ability to influence people. How strong are your communication skills right now? Have you mastered this? If not, this is what you need to work on. It doesn’t matter how much traffic you get … there are those in MLSP who have tons and tons of leads but they’re not the top recruiters in MLSP. Converting people into sales – that’s what counts. This means you understand how to build rapport with your prospect. It applies to all mediums you’re using to communicate: in person, in video, in meetings, on stage, on a webinar, and sales videos. The medium doesn’t matter because once you master the skill you can use any medium you choose. This is why people struggle – they think if they work on the medium they’re going to get the results. That’s not true – develop the fundamentals first then figure out the medium you’re going to use. Important aspects of strong communication skills:
a) rapport
b) ability to qualify and ask questions: dig deeper into your prospects needs, wants, and desires.
c) control : being able to lead a conversation when you’re talking to a prospect, being able to lead a viewer, a visitor, or an attendee. How do you lead your prospect through your website or through your sales funnel or through your video? How do you lead through your communication skills?
d) authority: the ability to project authority, expertise and confidence through your communications.

Have you nailed these things? Have you mastered them? These are the things you need to focus on. These are the things that are going to make you big money. You want to be like the leaders in this industry? You want to be a successful entrepreneur? These are the things you need to focus on.
Value, Direct Response and Communications. These are the big secrets I’ve revealed to you – the big breakthroughs that I’ve had in my business. These are the big secrets that are going to give you success and that are responsible for success for the majority of entrepreneurs and top producers that you know in this industry. These are the skills. Develop these skills and then it doesn’t matter what medium you choose to use.

Hope you apply this in your business moving forward today and really start focusing on the fundamentals. Don’t get lost in the information overload and all the techniques and tactics and strategies. All that is are great – you need to have those things. You want to have more leads you can handle, you want more traffic to your website – all are great but don’t lose sight that these fundamental principles are the skills that you need to develop and those other things will not replace these skills.

Personally, I have always believed that success with anything starts at the top; be it a small team or a large community.  When coming into MLSP 3 years ago, the main difference I noticed  between corporate America and MLSP was the attitude of the three Co-Founders, Norbert Orlewicz, Todd Schlomer and Brian Fanale.  They embody the character of the MLSP community.  How can you go wrong with a start like that?

You hear people talk about getting out of one’s own “comfort zone”.  We understand the term well enough when we hear it and nod in agreement.  However, when push comes to shove, and it’s our turn to stretch our limits and physically do what it takes to get us out of our comfort zone do we prevail?

I recently participated in a car race around a certified competition racetrack against people who had raced many times before.  It was my first race, if you knew how many speeding tickets I had you’d disagree but if we apply principles of life and learning to our business and extreme experiences we will prevail.

1. Are you leadable / teachable / coachable?
2. Do you listen and follow instruction from the more experienced?
3. Are you implementing what you learn?
4. Are you persistent and consistent?
5. Do you trust and believe in yourself and your endeavor?

During the race I’d come around a corner fast and feel the pull of gravity swing the car while veering toward the edge of the road.  Coming up to the edge I’d just focus on the next curve (goal) and accelerate.  There was ONLY room for confidence.  There were no “maybes” no “I don’t think I can”.

Apply that to your business.  There is only confidence. There are no “maybe this won’t work” and there isn’t “I can’t”.

Do you prevail when push comes to shove?  It’s a fine line between stepping up or stepping back.  All it takes is one decision.  Sounds simple enough but within that one decision lies a person’s make up, character, or foundation.

I call it confidence and a good sense of humor.

It’s this self confidence and sense of humor that supports my drive to succeed, that opens doors of opportunity and that genuinely makes things simply work out.  (To clarify, it’s the confidence that opens the doors and the sense of humor that pats me on the back when the ride isn’t as smooth icon wink Pedal to the Metal in Life and Business ).

No matter what it’s pedal to the metal. Go for it.  Get what you want out of life and don’t be afraid if you think what you want is out of your reach: it’s not.  If you’re giving up on yourself or your business; the only thing out of your reach is your lack of understanding that it’s a simple formula which leads to success.

1. Are you leadable / teachable / coachable?  Never stop learning.
2. Do you listen and follow instruction from the more experienced?  Pay attention and don’t try to reinvent the wheel.  Reinvent it after you’ve mastered it.

I listened to ones who had more experience and applied every single instruction they gave me.  I did well.  I was successful.  You will be too.

So there I was on the phone the other day calling a new member of my downline and suddenly I
was once again faced with the ugliest dark secret of the Network Marketing industry,

Attrition………..

I mean I shouldn’t have been surprised, they had of course been in the deal for a little over four
weeks.

Four weeks!!!

Good grief, sometimes it just kind of ticks you off!

In a little more than a month another MLM distributor had just disappeared, vaporized!

It’s like they had been swallowed up by the “Black Hole” of network marketing and probably
transported to some parallel universe of MLM.

Kind of like all those socks that seem to disappear in the drier from time to time.

I truly believe at some point I am going to discover where that parallel universe is and then I will
find a huge downline of all those “disappeared” distributors and of course thousands of missing
socks.

So that makes the question of the hour, why do people drop out of MLM?

Is it doubt, lack of commitment, laziness, kidnapping?

Now I have to tell you that even after more than 23 years in the MLM industry I still have to just
shake my head and wonder.

Here you have the greatest industry in the world, an industry where you can only achieve
success by helping other to excel and in doing so achieve financial success that is beyond
most people’s wildest dreams.

I mean it’s almost better than sex!

So what’s the problem?

It’s baffling really.

I have finally decided to call it a syndrome and just name the ugly beast.

That is of course what medical doctors do when they can’t figure out what’s wrong with
someone, they just call it a syndrome and give it a fancy name and that’s supposed to make you

feel better.

So I gave it some thought and decided to name it “IGD” (Instant Gratification Disappointment).

You know that’s what it is if course, the need for instant gratification.

Now it’s not just some character flaw in those missing distributors, the desire for instant
gratification exists in all of us.

Let’s face it, if we had a choice we would all rather have it now than wait.

We all want the magic pill, you know the one we swallow and our entire world changes …..
Instantly !

We all want the instant MLM Success lottery experience.

Now there actually is a magic pill, but it has nothing to do with instant MLM success.

Years ago in my first Network Marking company there was an upline leader called Richard Kall.

Now Richard was a great guy who was enormously successful and probably generated at his
high point over $500,000 per month in income. He used to always talk about the “magic pill” in
his presentations.

It went something like this….

“If I could distill everything I know about this business into a little pill, and you took it, you
wouldn’t sleep for a month!”

Now everyone always assumed he was talking about some secret strategy for MLM success, or
some closely guarded MLM marketing system, but he wasn’t.

The “Magic Pill” he spoke about was belief….

The belief that MLM success is real, and that we can accomplish our goals and have those huge
checks we all dream about in the network marketing industry.

If we have belief, then we are armed with the most powerful weapon in the entire MLM success
arsenal.

Now I am not talking about belief with a little “b” but belief with a capital “B”.

Now let’s be honest here, there are many companies out there in the MLM industry with great
life changing products and that’s fine, but we are all pretty much all here for the money.

Now all it takes to generate the little “b” belief is a quick look at couple of photocopied checks

from our upline and our heart starts pounding like a racehorse…..

…and we believe.

Ah yes, but do we really “Believe”?

Come on now…. It’s just us talking here, let’s be honest.

How realistic is it to really believe that you can generate an income of $30,000 or $40,000
(or if you think really big, $100,000) a month or more from your Network Marketing
business?

Is it pure fantasy? Is it luck? Or is it the result of a carefully executed business plan?

Well it’s actually all of those.

Now for some it’s only fantasy … they simply dream the dream, and if MLM success doesn’t
happen quickly or it takes actual work , they are gone in a heartbeat.

We work with them for a week or more, and then one day we call them up and they say “Marc
Who?” “Oh yeah, decided not to do that…”.

Those are the ones who burn us out on the MLM industry.

It’s the frustration of having passion, and trying to work with those who have none.

Then after the fantasy seekers, there are the people for whom success is purely a function of
luck. We have all seen them at company events where they are held out as shining examples of
what’s possible in the world of MLM success.

They just talked to a few who talked to a few and presto………. MLM Success and the big
checks!

But luck cannot be duplicated…. Try it in vegas if you don’t believe me.

It’s that lottery mentality, the hope of random luck that brings this group of uncommitted reps
into the MLM industry.

Now of course I would not turn down random luck if it smiled on me, but then it’s also a kind of
a curse in a way since most of the people who have hit the luck button know deep down inside
that they have no clue how they got there.

So it becomes impossible to ever duplicate that MLM success again

Last there are the MLM success stories that come as the result of study, understanding, and a
carefully executed business plan.

This is where real MLM success lies….

It is the true path, but of course it is also the hardest way, because you actually have to study, and
learn, and pay your dues.

It is the success lesson that all entrepreneurs have to learn at some point.

If you know the market is there, then success is simply finding the way to tap into it, to capture
that traffic, that flow of buyers you know is out there, and to hold on to your belief in the
process.

True entrepreneurs know there is no such thing as failure, there are only things that didn’t
work.

They know that if the market is there, they simply have to rework what didn’t work into what
does work, and it may take a little time but there is never any doubt in their heart of the outcome.

Be an entrepreneur…..

There is a great motivational story about one of histories’ great inventors and entrepreneurs
called Thomas Edison who it seems totally changed the world by inventing the incandescent
light bulb.

He was interviewed after the discovery and he told how he had failed time after time to find the
right material to make the light bulb work. The reporter who interviewed him asked him how he
had the faith to keep going after he failed over 3000 times, to which he replied:

“I didn’t fail 3,000 times. I just found 3,000 ways how not to create a light bulb, I never had any
doubt I would find the one that did work”.

Once you learn this lesson of “Belief” you will find it hard not to laugh out loud when you hear
that famous phrase that the network marketing quitter always speaks

Well it just didn’t work for me…..

So go out there ….. find the belief…..make the commitment…. And make it so…

Now one of the things that can help you spin the dial and transform “belief” to “Belief” is to #1
find a mentor figure who you relate to and form a relationship, and the other is to go to company
events so that you can actually reach out and touch the reality of it all.

My first company event for my first MLM company was in San Diego years ago. Now I already
believed when I went to it, I mean I had seen the checks and I even had a copy of one, but I did
not really Believe!

Then at that event, when I finally was immersed in the all encompassing reality of the business
and for the first time could actually reach out and touch the key players, I began to BELIEVE,
and that Belief took on a life of its own.

And so it started, I tell you I did not even need a plane to fly home I was already at 30,000 feet
and you know what, I never really did come back to earth.

Once I actually believed in my heart that it was real to the point where I could even taste it,
it was a pivotal turning point in my MLM career.

Nothing could stop me from achieving my goals in MLM ever again.
